At St Mary's School we recognise the importance of caring for the environment in which we live and are committed to sharing this vision with our children.

During Sustainability Day we enjoyed visits from two distinguished green crusaders: FORCE (Friends of the River Crane Environment) who are fresh from their successful campaign to secure funding for development of the Crane Valley area, (click here for more information) lead Key Stage One children on the Infant site.

Representatives from both FAIRTRADE and FORCE educated our Key Stage Two pupils. Learning focused on key environmental issues, and our younger children worked with a giant game called the Rubbish Challenge Game, whilst our older (KS2) children received a giant game called the Energy Challenge Game.

Yr 2 design a sustainable playground

Pupils each received a specially printed St Mary’s Sustainability sticker and we promoted Rosaline’s winning “St Mary’s Has Gone Green” logo for our recycling points.

There was a range of new books in the Libraries on the theme of Sustainability to help with research and idea generation.

Children made a pledge for one of the green “doorways” and have had the opportunity to design the “Recreation Area” outside, with 'Green' issues in mind. There were some wonderful ideas and inspiration. Children's work on Sustainability will be rewarded through the Celebration book, when certificates of merit are awarded for outstanding achievement.
